Summary:
The Community Cat Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the success of the community cat program by working with other agencies, individuals, and neighborhoods, both at the shelter and in the field, toward the goal of reducing cat intake and euthanasia in shelters.
Employees in this position are required to receive a pre-exposure rabies vaccination upon employment and receive boosters as required thereafter.
A typical work week may include weekends and holidays, with a rotating overnight on-call schedule.
Responsibilities:
Overseeing the Community Cat Program and all program volunteers Working with and maintains positive relationships with all stakeholders, including, but not limited to BARCS staff, local animal rescues, trappers, animal control, veterinarians, local government, community residents, business, etc Ensuring best practices and protocols are carried out in regards to cleaning, animal handling, safety and all other aspects of the program Responsible for conducting interview as requested by Director of Communications in regards to program Recruiting, training, and maintaining volunteers for the BCCP by providing orientation, assigning volunteer duties, answering questions and assisting with volunteers general needs Educating volunteer trappers, caregivers on community cat program process, use of traps, and delivers supplies and traps as necessary Delivering educational materials and tools designed to increase acceptance of the community cat programs, including presentations and workshops as needed Abating nuisance complaints by working closely with Animal Control.
Educate the public on TNR best practices and offering conflict resolution services to caregivers, complainants, independent trappers and other community residents as necessary Working with Animal Control in various situations including, but not limited to, animals trapped in vacant buildings, hoarding cases, field support in dangerous areas, outdoor cat cruelty/abuse issues, etc Performing fieldwork in the Baltimore community including:
working with cat caregivers, monitoring community cat colonies, trapping, scheduling surgery, education, and transporting and also providing community outreach such as door to door block walking and collateral distribution Answering calls from the community about free roaming cats, nuisance complaints, and assists with managing hotline, individual and general email accounts, tracking and responding to calls and texts Maintaining current relevant data in various spreadsheets Managing food and other items donated for the BARCS Community Cat Program (BCCP) Scheduling cats for surgery drop off and pick up, transporting cats, returning cats to field, and making reminder calls as needed Assisting with a trap loan program including, maintaining paperwork and tracking all traps on loan, ensuring traps are clean, in working order and clearly labeled.
Working closely with shelter staff evaluating cats that may be eligible for the BCCP and assisting with evaluations, coordination and placement of cats through the working cat program Ensuring that clinic policies and procedures are being followed and work with clinic staff and program supervisors to maintain an effective and positive cross-departmental work environment Coordinating medical care and procedures of cats outside of regular spay and neuter, monitors their progress and works toward recovery and a live outcome for each Assisting with medical care needs such as:
restraining, medicating, drawing blood, monitoring post-surgery recovery, vaccinating, and grooming Assisting with working cat program; evaluating cats in the shelter, socializing and placing cats into appropriate outdoor homes Tracking and maintains all inventory Maintaining Community Cat van including set up, cleaning, oil changes and maintenance as needed Maintaining a clean driving record to meet insurance requirements Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications One year experience in an animal related field Previous experience working with animals required and experience with cats preferred Demonstrates excellent written and verbal skills as well as computer skills Able to work varied hours, including holidays, weekends, late and early hours and split shifts, as needed.
Excellent people skills with the ability to relate and work with diverse groups and individuals and to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
Must be able to keep everyone focused and working together.
Proficient with Internet navigation and a variety of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
Willingness and ability to learn additional software applications, as needed.
Must be 21 with a valid driver's license and clean driving record that meets our Motor Vehicle Insurance requirements, and must have access to transportation.
Experience with and ability to drive large multi-passenger vehicles including vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
Must be able to navigate on the road with various mapping applications Willing to function independently in the field in Baltimore City.
Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
Knowledge and Skills Ability to effectively and safely handle animals with a variety of behavior and medical conditions, including feral and fractious cats Ability to speak in front of large groups of people to perform presentations and training as needed Knowledge and experience with outdoor cats programs preferred Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and volunteers, and contribute to a positive working environment Ability to follow written and verbal directions concerning the care, handling and disposition of animals Ability to work both independently as well as with a team Ability to assess, detect and recognize animal behavior and health that is potentially dangerous for both humans and/or animals Proficient in time management, organization, and problem-solving.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with a variety of people Must be detail oriented and able to prioritize and perform duties efficiently and effectively Committed to maintaining the BARCS high standard of animal care and mission Working Conditions Work is performed in an animal shelter that operates seven days a week, with exposure to conditions such as dust, wetness, odors, high noise levels, etc.
Similar work is also conducted offsite/outside for this position with all types of weather related conditions.
Work requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, standing for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time doing administrative duties, bending often to interact with animals, lifting animals of all shapes and sizes.
Lifting bags of litter, food and equipment with an average weight of 50 pounds.
There is exposure to animals of all kinds including domestic, wildlife, and farm animals.
There is potential exposure to:
sharp objects, cleaning agents, animal waste, zoonotic diseases, dangerous or fractious animals, and potentially hazardous conditions including the risk of animal scratches and bites.
There is also exposure to friendly, loving animals in need of your affection.
